Saving Money on Your Wedding Cake

We saved money on the wedding cake because we ordered a very plain cake. It was only frosted with pearl frosting edging. Then we took left over live flowers that were not used in the wedding and decorated the cake. Her cake was absolutely magnificent and so simple to do as well as money saving!

Several years ago I worked as a wedding hostess at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in Salt Lake City. One of my duties was to cut the wedding cake, so I saw all kinds. One of my favorites was a series of about five cakes all decorated differently, but in the same colors. Each was placed on a tall, antique cake plate and the total effect was gorgeous! Those particular cakes were professionally made, but I remember thinking at the time that it would not be hard to make such a set of cakes yourself.

The Wilton company puts out a book that shows how to make wedding cakes. I plan to make my own children's cakes when the time comes, if they will let me!

The saddest thing to me about wedding cake is all the waste. Look around at the next wedding you attend at at all the half-eaten or not-eaten cake lying around on tables. On the other hand, the appetizers seem to get devoured, and fast! Better to have tons of great appetizers!

What about just not having a cake? I'm serious. If you have a fun enough party, lots of other good food, beverages, and plenty of dancing, nobody will miss it! Months later I was remembering a wedding I attended and all the fun I'd had when it occurred to me there was no cake!

The party was nevertheless fantastic and a super special day for everyone.

If you must do the cake thing, have a small, pretty one for the table display & cutting ceremony (which is not absolutely necessary, you know--be unique and do something else!) and have a sheet cake in the back to be cut up and handed out to the guests.

As far as the anniversary cake... please! Will you really want to eat a year-old frozen cake? Will it make your wedding more special or your marriage better? Save the cash!

For many smaller budget weddings I've done a medium sheet cake and in the left corner put just a small topper cake on pillars. It's pretty and the couple has a little top cake to cut. It's half the mess and serves the same purpose.

Inexpensive Wedding Cake... I did a lot of research and calling to save money on my wedding. I almost had a heart attack when the first bakery called me back and told me it would be $1300 to serve cake for 350 people. This was not in our budget. I finally, after more then 30 calls, found a small family owned bakery.

I cut a cake out of a magazine. It was 4 tiered stacked round cake with a scalloped edge and a lace look on each layer. The cake itself served about 200. We did the rest in sheet cake which was precut and each individual piece was decorated.

They included the anniversary 6 inch cake for free and there was no extra charge for filling. We had 6 different flavors total. All in all, with delivery which was an hour away, our cake was under $350!

I agree w/ Mary about having a small pretty cake for the bride/groom to cut if they wish, but then serve the guests from a large sheet cake kept in the kitchen. The guests wouldn't know the difference, cake is cake. This is what my sister & her husband did, they didn't want to pay lots-$$ for cake for their guests, the sheet cake was just as good & much cheaper & easier for staff to work with.

The cake they cut was small, simply decorated w/ their colors & had their names on it. Nothing fancy, very nice!

I used the cupcake tree design for my wedding cake. You can go to and see what I am talking about. I bought the stand and ordered the cupcakes from Sam's wholesale instead of a bakery. The total cost for the whole thing, including a top cake for us to save, was 65$ and it was beautiful.
