What kind/shape of lantern are you thinking of?
What runs through my mind would be to start saving your empty jars. Soak in hot, soapy water to remove labels and glue then encircle some wire right under the rim at the top and then form a handle and run the ends of the handle underneath the wire around the rim, vary the lengths of the handles if you wanted. Maybe fill the bottoms of each jar with those little craft stones you can get at Walmart or any craft store and nestle a votive candle in the center and light, then hang on branch of tree.
