The groom's cake can be served at the rehearsal dinner or at the reception.

At a wedding I attended, it was packed into boxes and given to guests when they left.

At out wedding we served the Groom's cake at the Rehearsal Dinner since that was his family's night anyway. That took care of their dessert that night and kept us from buying two cakes for the wedding. We did a chocolate fountain instead of the extra cake the next day.

I bought a small chocolate fountain for about $20 and it took another $18 to buy the chocolate and everything to go with it and it was a huge hit!
